Domitian

Born: 24 October 51 AD
Died: 18 September 96 AD
Reign: 81 AD – 96 AD

Domitian came to power following the death of his brother Titus. He is remembered in the history books as the emperor who demanded his subjects to address him as ‘lord and god’ and to worship him as such.

These demands led to trouble for Christian communities who refused to worship the Emperor. Persecution was particularly bad in Asia Minor (Western Turkey) where the cities of Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia and Laodicea were located. It was during this time that John, a leader among the Churches in Asia Minor, received the vision in the book of Revelation. He was exiled on the island of Patmos at the time, probably due to his Christian beliefs and his position of influence in the region.
