Titus

Born: 30 December 39 AD

Died: 13 September 81 AD

Reign: 79 AD – 81 AD

 

 

Titus took over command of the 10th Roman legion’s campaign in Judea in 69 AD when his father Vespasian was proclaimed emperor. Over the following year, Titus and his troops closed in on the city of Jerusalem where the rebel leaders were holding out.

 

After months of conflict, the rebels were eventually overcome in a final battle on the temple mount. During the battle the Jewish temple was set alight and destroyed. 

 

Over the years that followed the Jewish revolt, the structures on top of the temple mount were methodically dismantled and the stone blocks either thrown down onto the street below or reused in other construction. This act fulfilled the prophesy of Jesus in the gospels where it says:

 

Jesus left the temple and was walking away when his disciples came up to him to call his attention to its buildings. “Do you see all these things?” he asked. “Truly I tell you, not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.” (Matthew 24:1-2)

Made from an earlier portrait head (possibly of the emperor Caligula), reworked to render the features of Titus. Made from Pentelic marble.
