Augustus and Family
Augustus
Born: 23 September 63 BC
Died: 19 August 14 AD
Reign: 27 BC – 14 AD
Augustus was the emperor at the time of Jesus Birth. His decree to take a census meant that Joseph and Mary had to travel to their ancestral hometown of Bethlehem for the census. It was during their visit to Bethlehem that Jesus was born.
Luke 2:1-3
In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. 2 (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3 And everyone went to their own town to register.
Augustus’ reign bought a degree of peace and stability to the empire known as the ‘Roman peace’ or ‘Pax Romana’. Travel became safer and the empire flourished as many roads, bridges and aqueducts were constructed and many other public works were carried out.
